Schools
Pownal originally had 14 School Districts. The One room schools allowed students in each of the districts to walk to School. These were called Common Schools and had only one teacher teaching all grades. Teachers would also walk to school, getting there before the students so they could start a fire in the stove and warm the school room before students arrived. Some teachers lived a distance from the school so they would board with a local family for the week and return home on the weekends.
Later graded schools replaced the common schools. A graded school sorted the children by grades, had more than one room and multiple teachers.
